Karelia
If you are tired of the big cities’ buzz Karelia is the place for you to visit. Located 300 km north from St Petersburg, Karelia is an astonishing land of blue lakes, rapid rivers, evergreen pine- and fir-trees and massive rocks. Ideal place to escape the hastle and bustle of civilization!
The outstanding nature, unique monuments that preserve the history and culture of the Northern people, calm and friendly inhabitants turned Karelia into a place of annual tourist pilgrimage. Karelia has many places to visit: Kizhi - an internationally known museum of wooden architecture, hiding away on an island in Onego Lake; Valaam Monastery in Ladoga Lake, Petroglyphs - (pre-historic) 4000 years old rock carvings on the shores of Onego Lake (made more than 4000 years ago) and Solovetsky Islands, which were a monastery in the Middle Ages, a prison of Stalin's GULag and a museum at present.
Transfiguration Cathedral on Kizhi island is known as a symbol of Karelia. Legend says that it was built without a single nail!
