Vologda is a cultural center of Russian North! The city of craftsmen, filled with carved masterpieces of wooden architecture from Empire to Art Nouveau. The capital of Russian lacemakers, whose fabulous works are known throughout the world. The religious center surrounded by ancient monasteries where the masterpieces of medieval artists and jewelers are hidden from prying eyes. We invite you to set off on a journey and discover all secrets of this amazing city!

DAY 1. TRAIN MOSCOW – VOLOGDA

  • Departure to Vologda by night train (the tickets are NOT included). Overnight on the train.

DAY 2. VOLOGDA

  • Arrival in Vologda
  • Breakfast in a local cafe
  • City tour of Vologda including historical center walking tour
  • Excursion to the Vologda Kremlin and visit of St. Sofia Cathedral
  • Excursion to the Vologda Lace Museum
  • Lunch in a local restaurant
  • Architectural – Ethnographic Museum “Semenkovo”. Interactive program dedicated to Vologda butter
  • Check-in, evening at leisure. Overnight at the hotel ***

DAY 3. VOLOGDA – FERAPONTOVO – KIRILLOV – MOSCOW

  • Breakfast at the hotel, check–out
  • Departure to Feropontovo by coach (2 hours on the way)
  • Excursion to the Feropontov Monastery and internal visit of including entrance to the Cathedralof Nativity of Our Lady
  • Lunch in the dining room of a monastery
  • Excursion to the St. Cyril's Monastery
  • Departure to Vologda (2 hours on the way)
  • Free time in city center
  • Departure to Moscow by night train (the tickets are paid additionally)

DAY 4. MOSCOW

  • Arrival in Moscow. End of the tour.

DURING THE TOUR YOU WILL SEE:

  • Vologda is an amazing ancient city which history could have been different, if not for the stone that fell on the head of Ivan the Terrible during the construction of St. Sophia Cathedral which was perceived as a bad sign. After this event the tsar left Vologda forever and a magnificent Cathedral which was built in the image of the Assumption Cathedral in Moscow was consecrated only after his death. There is no central point in the city tour as besides St. Sophia Cathedral and the Vologda Kremlin, which you will visit within the tour, all city center with its wooden buildings wrapped in lace delicate thread is one big attraction. In one of these building you will take part in master class dedicated to the history of Vologda butter which became a global brand in the 19th century. In the Vologda Lace Museum you will admire the famous masterpieces of the Vologda lace-makers.
  • Feropontovo is the village where you will visit the Feropontov Monastery. In its main cathedral you will see the only fully preserved frescoes executed by Dionysius - an outstanding icon painter, the most venerated artist of Russia late XV - early XVI centuries, contemporary of Raphael, Leonardo, Botticelli, Durer. The ensemble of the monastery that has come down to us without any significant rebuilding is an amazing example of harmony of ancient Russian architecture with natural landscape.
  • Kirillov is the town on the bank of Lake Siverskoye where you will see the majestic fortress - St. Cyril's Monastery. Within your tour around the monastery you will know why this place was highly valued by Ivan the Terrible, visit one of the first stone buildings of Russian North – Assumption Cathedral, built in just five warm months. A fascinating story about life of this famous abode, which was not only center for the spread of Orthodoxy, but an important trading point and a serious obstacle to the invaders, awaits you!
